It’s been a while since I shared some new cookbooks with you. I have a small collection of new-ish titles I’ve acquired and have been taking time to read and cook from. Here are some new cookbooks that have caught my eye.
Seasoning by Angela Clutton is a really exciting new book from Angela, a hugely talented food writer, whom I am privileged to call a friend. Seasoning focuses on cooking with the seasons. Her recipes are achievable, original and delicious. This is a great read and full of tempting ideas. I really liked the tempura purple sprouting broccoli with white miso aioli and roasted carrots with little gem, za’atar and lime.
A Whisper of Cardamom by Eleanor Ford is a new baking book filled with 80 recipes that use spices in a sweet context. If you are new to Eleanor’s books, they make great reading and are full of fascinating information on the ingredients used and their provenance. A great read and an inspiring book to cook from.
Seafood Journey by Ghillie Basan is a relatively new publication, but one that is new to my collection. It gives an insightful introduction to Scottish seafood, with a journey around the coast sharing tales and 90 recipes using the wealth of ingredients Ghillie finds along the way. Again, if you have not come across her work before, do take a look at her impressive and extensive back catalogue - she is the author of many important books on Middle Eastern and African cooking, for example, and wrote the first Turkish cookbook in the English language (which is used for reference by Yotam Ottolenghi and many others).
Funky by Caitlin Ruth is the latest in the Dublin-based Blasta Books series. These short books are almost single-subject, and this one covers ferments and pickles and many ways to use them. It’s a really interesting and creative book, full of easy and achievable ideas. Having written about fermenting myself (in my 2015 book, FERMENTED), this book covers a lot more pickling than I have ever done myself, and I liked the ideas within.
