Any signs of life in the garden this morning are restricted to inside the greenhouse, I suspect, as we are in the middle of an another cold snap.
Last week, we sowed many of our seeds and are planning our vegetables for the months ahead. The fruit trees have started to bud. So, whilst there is much to look forward to, there is very little food to be had from the garden at the moment.
The seasons do seem to be a bit out of kilter, however, as I’m hearing some English asparagus is likely to be ready two months early this year.
Relying on the shops as I have been, I’ve bought some great mushrooms, kale, parsnips and rhubarb in the last week or so. This week’s recipe for subscribers is a great use of the lovely mushrooms, carrots, onions, potatoes and kale around at the moment.
If you are able to find a specialist grocer, you may find puntarelle, calçots and blood oranges.
Another delight from my shopping basket has included some really outstanding flour from WILDFARMED. I love what they are doing, and can confirm the the flour is totally and utterly delicious. Do consider buying it if you find it for sale.
It’s also the time of year when sheep and goat milk cheeses start to get really good. I have enjoyed a number of varieties from White Lake Cheese in Somerset, who sell a wide range of varieties by the type of milk.
And finally, there are some good offers on end of season venison around at the moment. It’s always such a treat, so do give it a go if you have not already.
Wishing you a delicious weekend ahead, and thank you for reading.
